Environmental solvents - PAH grade solvents For picogramlevel detection of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in water, solid waste and air Acros Organics offers a specialized range of solvents, which are tested for trace analysis of polyaromatic hydrocarbons. PAH are condensed ring aromatic compounds that are formed (pyrosynthesized) during incomplete combustion. PAHs are analysed by HPLC with UV and fluorescence detection. Acros Organics PAH solvents are therefore tested for use with analytical methods based on HPLC with UV and fluorescence detection and a clean and noise-free baseline for excitation at lambda 280-305 nm and emission at lambda 340-500 nm. The characterisation of PAH and their hetero analogues, such as benzofurans and dioxines, which occur in soot and fly ash of combustion processes has become very important because of the environmental concern. Some PAHs are known as very toxic and mutagene. The formation of PAHs has been detected in a large variety of combustion processess, from waste incineration, coal, wood and biomass burning, traffic exhaust, cigarette smoking, methane flames, kinetics in an ethylene feeded reactor, to the Beilstein copper wire halogen test. Their exact identification, in such kind of studies is restricted due to the fact that only a few PAHs are commercially available, which can than be used as reference compounds. Straightforward synthetic ways for PAHs are not always available which causes problems in making reference samples for environmental studies and model compounds to correlate structure and toxicity. The America Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed sixteen PAHs (Table), from naphtalene to compounds with up to six fused rings, as reference compounds. These compounds are coherent because they are generally found together in aire, water or soil samples.
